They are intended primarily to restore and maintain a practitioner's well-being, improve the body's flexibility and vitality. They refer to two things: the place and the posture in which s/he sits. It is suggested that is "to be seated in a position that is firm, but relaxed". As the repertoire of postures has expanded over the centuries, modern usage has come to include variations from lying on the back and standing on the head.
The inverted postures are most important poses for rejuvenation. They are especially recommended for women because of their regenerating effect on the thyroid. Regular practice of the inverted postures like "The shoulder-stand pose" and "The plough pose" normalizes menstruation. In case of displacement of uterus and fallopian tubes, all inverted postures help the displaced organs to fall into their correct positions.
However it is recommended not to do inverted postures when you are menstruating. The retrograde flow or back flow may develop endometriosis, a growth of uterine tissue. It is however not a proven fact!
