Moon and Moon phases
General facts on Moon and its relationship with the Earth
Moon (lat. Luna) is the Earth’s closest celestial body. Moon revolves around the Earth in elliptic orbit and it takes 27,3 days to do one revolution around Earth (this is called sidereal rotation period). However, as the Earth revolves around the Sun, Moon takes 29,5 days to return to the same spot (synodic rotation period), if we look at his rotation from the aspect Earth-Moon-Sun.
It is widely known today that the tides occur because of gravitational forces, which are located between the Earth, the Moon and the Sun at their relative movement through space. The Moon revolves around the Earth, and because of its attraction of the Earth, attractive force appears between them influencing the Earth. All but huge masses of water on the Earth (71% of Earth's surface is covered with water), is not flexible enough to be attracted by the Moon, so the Moon attracts to itself the large masses of water (oceans, seas, Great Lakes), causing the withdrawal of the sea level on the coast. The sea level drops as the impact gets stronger and we call it “low tide”. Gradually the impact weakens and leads to a gradual increase of sea level back to the original condition and we call this phenomenon “the tides”. The thing that is also happening is that the moon moves the Earth's crust for about 30 cm.
Due to a constant changing position of the Sun and the Earth, the Moon is illuminated differently, so the Moon can be seen in four phases:
- New Moon (The side of the moon facing the Earth is not illuminated. Additionally, the moon is up throughout the day, and down throughout the night. For these reasons we cannot see the moon during this phase.)
- First Quarter (During first quarter, 1/2 of the moon is visible for the first half of the evening, and then goes down, leaving the sky very dark.)
- Full Moon (When we can observe the entire face of the moon, we call it a Full Moon. A full moon will rise just as the evening begins, and will set about the time morning is ushered in.)
- Last Quarter (During a Last Quarter Moon we can see exactly 1/2 of the Moon's lighted surface.)
Examples of the Scientific research of the Moon
The fact is that the Moon has an impact on the Earth and on the all living beings on it. The time of birth of the child is exactly nine lunar months and more of us were born during the new moon and the full moon than at any other stage. Research has shown that when external influences are shut out, primarily sunlight, many creatures will adjust their daily routine to the lunar day (about 24 hours and 50 minutes).
There are many scientific experiments that were conducted on this topic, but one of the most convincing is that of Dr. Frank A. Brown, a biologist at Northwestern University (University of Chicago), who transferred live oysters from their original location (coastal Connecticut) to his laboratory in Chicago. Oysters open their shells with each high tide, and Dr. Brown wanted to see if this was due to the change in ocean levels or to a force from the moon itself. He put them in shallow dish with water and removed them from all sunlight. For the first week they continued to open their shells with the high tides from their ocean home. But by the second week, they had adjusted their shell-openings to when the moon was directly overhead or underfoot in Chicago. Dr. Brown concluded that this must be due to the direct power of the moon and probably electromagnetic energy, which acts together with the electromagnetic fields, that surrounds the oysters.
Effect of the Moon on Human Beings
We have seen the relationship between the moon and the Earth and its attractive influence on the surface waters. We also know that water is the most important ingredient of our body. It makes up about 69-80% of the human body and because of water human body is balanced mentally and physically.
If we use common sense, and we take into consideration that the Moons attractive forces move great seas, and oceans, we can safely conclude that it also has a major impact on the water that we ourselves are made off. However, the human body and psyche have to be observed closely in order to see the exact effect of the Moon on each individual or character. So here we will present what we know on this subject.
We can all use the Moon's phases in a positive way. So the same knowledge use many farmers, fishermen, hunters, gardeners and housewives. They use what was transmitted from generation to generation. Today it is possible to find many books with the lunar tides on the Internet. Here we list the basic features of the 4 different phases.
New Moon
Many calendars will show this stage as a blackened moon (dead month), thus showing that the Moon cannot be seen at night because it is between the Earth and the Sun. New Moon is associated with initiating and with increasing awareness. This is a good time for planning, starting new projects and businesses. Also it is a good time to clean our organisms and start to break bad habits. On the psychological level, men feel young moon stronger than women. At this time the Earth starts to inhale.
First Quarter (Moon can be seen during the night)
At this stage, power of the Moon begins to grow strongly. During this stage everything develops and grows better. It is a time when energy is accumulated, and our vital force is restored by itself. The nutrients are well absorbed and the body loses less fluid from the body, so it's good to be careful with the accumulation of weight. Wounds heal slowly, and the recovery time is longer. Children conceived during this period will have positive personality. At this time of the Moon, the sex life is better. This is a good time to visit the hairdresser, if you want your hair to grow faster. Seafood caught in this period will be abundant, with more meat. Sowing, changing the earth in containers of domestic plants have a larger chance of success, and everything else that one starts to do during the growing Moon, regardless of whether this is job, love or friendship will also have more success. Also this is a good time to take care of the skin.
Full Moon
This is the stage where the Earth is located between the Sun and the Moon and the Sun shines on the Moon fully. In calendars, this is usually shown as a full white circle. The full moon marks the enlightenment, completeness and discomfort. The full moon has the strongest influence compared to all other phases. This is a period of internal tension, and this increases our activity. It causes mental instability, heightened emotions, and it brings insomnia to the people who are otherwise inclined to it. In fact we can say that the full Moon enhances all your thoughts whatever they might be. People who have predominantly negative thoughts, the same thoughts will be greatly enhanced. So it appears that many robberies or murders happen during the days of the full Moon. However those that have a good focus and a strong concentration can use this powerful energy for something positive and constructive. People who are not aware of their thoughts and actions can often argue in this period or can even experience accidents because of their own negligence or suddenness. Women and sick people feel full moon stronger than men. This phase is also the largest abundance phase.
Last Quarter (Moon can be seen in the morning)
This is the time for energy releasing and liberation. Also this is a good period for waxing (depilation) and dying of hair. Men will notice that their beards grow slower. It is a good time to visit the dentist, to take cosmetic procedures or any other operation, because the scars will heal faster. Period is ideal for cutting and extraction of trees and plants because their juice will not come out when they are cut. This is the stage for relaxation and meditation. At this stage we should turn back to ourselves. This is an excellent time to work on ourselves, to take care of our skin and prepare ourselves for the upcoming new moon.
Moon in Astrology
Moon in astrology has a special role - it is a symbol of emotions and instinctive reactions and it is talking about our primary needs and the relationship with our Mother. Influence of the Moon is most active during the first three years of our lifes. In this period of our life we absorb like a sponge everything that happens around us, and therefore even psychologists warn us how this first three years are essential for the child development and for developing the overall personality. Moon often represents a spiritual power. During a full Moon, according to some interpretations, the man is in an ideal spiritual environment. The Moon is one of the most maneuverable bodies and it is a symbol of sensitivity and applicability. In a personal horoscope describes the emotionality and sensitivity.
The house in which the Moon appears in our horoscope reveals a lot about our habits, instincts and reactions. It reveals how we express and how we deal with our emotions and our most basic needs. Since father is equivalent to the Sun, and mother to the Moon, Moon sign also indicates the way how we "nurture" others, as well as ourselves.
The house where the Moon is located also signifies the area of life where the characteristics of the Moon are most obvious and most intense. It also points about the strengths and influences of the Moon on our lives in general.
